Last week David had to be in Charleston so that he could be admitted to the SC bar. Finley and I were persuaded to skip school one day and come along with him to spend the weekend in Charleston!
While David was completing his final course work, Finley and I headed over to the Children's Museum. I kind of wanted to go to the aquarium instead, but I let Finley choose and since this was way cheaper we went with it!
We had a blast playing in their medieval castle.
There were all kinds of dungeons to hide in and explore.
They also had a great raceway section where you raced golf balls down ramps.
And a fun water section. I was so glad they had these smocks to keep Finley from getting soaked!
Of course the pirate ship was a favorite spot for Finley.
And we also took turns checking each other out at the little market grocery store.
We were there during art time so Finley got to make a super cute puffy snowman.
By the afternoon it had warmed up so we played on the outdoor firetruck.
Right across the street from the museum was another little mini museum with this train in it.
I think it was called the Big Friendly Train or something like that. Finley really wanted to climb on it, but we weren't allowed to.
That night we met up with my childhood friend Beth and her husband Sean for dinner. We stayed the rest of the weekend at their amazing house! Well, technically it is Sean's parents house they are staying in while Sean gets his law firm off the ground. Either way it was so nice and luxurious.
Saturday Beth and Sean took us to this awesome State Park nearby.
We learned about the history of Charles Town and even got to try on period clothing.
After it warmed up a bit we explored the grounds.
They have a mini zoo with a bunch of local animals. Picture above is a wolf.
And this bear looked so sweet and cuddly!
I don't think I had ever seen one so close before!
I didn't realize bison were native to this area.
We had a lot of fun checking out the turkeys. Initially they were really far away, but Sean broke out his cell phone to look up mating calls and played it so all the turkeys came to us! Ha!
Finley got a kick out of seeing some real cannons.
On the water they had this amazing replica boat to explore.
They allowed us to go down into the bottom of the boat and check things out.
I can't believe Beth and I have been friends for so long! We have known each other since we were toddlers. I am so glad we are still in touch!
We got a wonderful view from the boat of the big Charleston bridge.
And the guide showed Finley how to steer the boat.
This replica showing how the boat was made reminded me of Noah's ark.
After watching the UNC basketball game we headed to the beach for a quick look before we got some delicious seafood dinner.
Finley had fun running around and seeing the world's ugliest lighthouse. Check out it's unusual shape.
It was super cold and windy on the water so we didn't stay long. I guess we will just have to come for another visit when it is warmer :). We had such a fun little impromptu getaway! It was so great to catch up with old friends and we can't wait to go back again and do some more exploring of Charleston. Thanks again for being such awesome hosts Beth & Sean! You know that by being such great hosts that we are coming back again now right?! :)
