Our first full day with the cousins we headed over to a quaint little town called Burford in Oxfordshire. A friend of my cousin's mum lives there and she loves to give tours of the town. Above is a picture of a traditional thatched roof house. I am amazed they still have thatched roof houses and that they don't leak!
It was a pretty chilly day and a bit overcast, but we still had fun walking through the old parts of the town.
They have beautiful stone walls, cobblestone streets, and a river that eventually meets up with the Thames that runs through it.
There's even a local legend about a ghost that haunts the area. Annie was really nervous about this, but luckily we didn't see any ghosts!
We visited with some ducks who were having trouble swimming against the very strong current!
With it raining so much in England most of the paths were pretty muddy. Claire even got stuck in one particularly muddy patch. Luckily Steve rescued her!
We passed through the old cemetery.
And played in the ruins of Minster Lovell's Hall and Dovecote.
Finley and Claire anxiously looked for the ghost!
The residence was built in the 1440s and later dismantled in 1747.
We toured the grounds and learned that a dovecote was a home for the pigeons or doves. The wealthy folks had dovecotes for the birds to nest in so then they could later eat them anytime they wanted! The dovecote is the round building in the back of the picture below.
After touring the town and visiting a few nearby local shops we had a traditional pub lunch.
After a fun day out and about we spent the rest of the evening at my cousin's playing and getting ready for Easter. Finley was hoping that the Easter bunny would be able to find him all the way in England! I assured him that yes he does travel to England because people celebrate Easter here too!
