The Art of the Brick

This past weekend our family headed over to Graham to see the traveling exhibit of "The Art of the Brick".

This exhibit features sculptures made out of thousands of Legos by artist, and former lawyer, Nathan Sawaya. 

The exhibit features over 30 different sculptures. This one entitled "Yellow" was Finley's favorite piece. 

This very colorful sculpture was made from Lego bricks donated by children. Nathan asked each child near where he lived to donate 1 Lego piece from their own collection and he used them to create several colorful pieces. The artist normally buys his own Legos for his sculptures costing him over six figures a year. 

There were a few flat 'pictures' that look better when you photograph them as opposed to looking directly at them. 

When I asked Finley what the sculpture on the left looked like he said 'A dog'. Not quite honey! These four skulls are identical except for their teeth. 

This was my favorite piece. It looks so real! It is called 'Gray'.

Most of Nathan's sculptures take him 2 - 3 weeks to construct and he uses between 15,000 and 25,000 bricks for life size sculptures of people. 

Over in the children's museum there were some cool kid sculptures including this castle coming out of a story book. There was even a mini story written on the book about the castle and it's inhabitants. 

These crayons were a huge hit too. 

I was really impressed with how well Finley did at his first art exhibit. 

This little guy is called a Hugman and is a form of graffiti art. Nathan places Hugmen all around NYC attaching them to trees, signs, posts, benches, etc. He says they usually last a good few hours before they disappear. Now he has started taking them with him when he travels and leaves them all over the world.  

This piece called Think! was David's favorite piece.

After checking out all the Lego Sculptures we headed outside for some activities. Finley made a little art with the help of some Lego robotics. 

And of course they had some Legos to build with. 

After seeing the exhibit we did a little scavenger hunt to find mice sculptures using clues all over downtown Graham. It was a fun day for Finley! He really enjoyed seeing everything. If you have a Lego fan in your family I would highly recommend taking them to see this exhibit! I think it runs through the end of October.
